Cleveland Rocks...

It is always good to try different photo events and something out of your comfort zone. My daughter invited me to "help" her shoot the AP Tour at the House of Blues in Cleveland and this was my first live event shoot. Only stood out a bid trying to shoot a punk rock concert, but I think I was getting the hang of it by the time the forth band hit the stage. Trying to cature these bands jumping around and bad light takes some skill. Check out more of Cara's concert images here.

We have spent the last month in DC with what feels like rain every day. Today was a great clear and crisp fall day and it came at a great time for the Play For Parkinson's Lacrosse Series. Great turn-out for this event with 12 of the top NCAA men's and women's lacrosse teams.

Yea, I am getting old. I have watched several of these pro players grow-up and photographed their games from high school to college and now the pro Major League Lacrosse championship game. What 24 hours makes, this game was sunny, blue skys and a dry field. So long Irene.

So mark this up in my list of photo assignments - shoot a game in the middle of a hurricane. OK, the first games was wet and the rain added to some good shots, the second game was almost not worth the effort. The rain was coming down in sheets anything I had to clean the front of my lens was soaking wet. Final championship game today and it is still raining. Supposed to dry by the time of the face-off.

The Official End To My Lacrosse Season

This past week I had the chance to shoot the National Lacrosse Classic, it was great to see all the players and teams from around the country. Just a few years back, all you would see would be teams from the East, but teams are here from Carolina, Missouri, Ohio and Northern California.

This marks the end to my lacrosse photo season. I have been happy with my progress and my goal this year was to try for more than the standard shot.

I had the opportunity to shoot the Spartan Race in Virginia over the weekend, what a great time watching these runners weave through and over 18 obstacles including a 100 yard mud crawl under barbed wire. I was shooting the action at the Gladiator pit which the runners really loved the challenged or were really annoyed that these guys were preventing them from the finish line.

It has been a few days since I spent the weekend in Baltimore shooting the NCAA D-1 Lacrosse Championship and I finally had chance to look at some of my photographs. I up-loaded some right after the game from the stadium and now that I have had a chance to look at the games again, I notice a few more that captured the action and emotion from the championship game.

Tewaaraton Award

It was great to see and hear all the passion and sportsmanship with the close-knit Lacrosse community at the Tewaaraton awards at the Warner Theater in DC. Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports played in North America and the award honors the Native American heritage of lacrosse in the name of its trophy, "Tewaaraton," the Mohawk name for their game.

This was the first year of the Tewaaraton Legends Award, and professional football and lacrosse Hall of Famer Jim Brown was selected as the inaugural recipient. It was great to hear all the old stories from his teammate and legendary coach Roy Simmons Jr. I have enjoyed shooting this event the past few years and having Jim Brown receive this award was a bonus this year.

Championship Monday

Congratulations to the University of Virginia lacrosse team for winning D-1 National Championship. UVA are now 5-4 in NCAA Tournament championship games, and is this fourth for Cavalier head coach Dom Starsia. Thanks to a game strategy that worked well against the Terrapins, the game was very low-scoring and the first quarter was the lowest scoring first quarter in NCAA Division I Championship game history.

I had trouble finding a rhythm to the game in the first half, the but second half worked better for me. Overall I was happy with the game photos and here are a few samples from the game.

NCAA Lacrosse Semi-Finals Game 2

The Maryland vs Duke game had a much different feel with the larger home-team crowd getting into every hit, shot and save. This Maryland team can hit and it looks like Duke just was not ready for what the Terrapins had in store. Should be a good game on Monday with UVA vs UMD and full stadium.

NCAA Lacrosse Semi-Finals Game 1

Not much of a game after UVA pulled out to a big lead and I was struggling all day to get in the grove of the game. First my main camera (Canon Mark III) broke (again) and I had change my set-up during the game and then UVA played keep-away the second half and the action was minimal. Good that I had my old reliable Mark II as a back-up. Here are a few samples from the game and good luck UVA on Monday in the Championship game.

Prep vs Landon Round II - IAC Championship

No more Co-Champions in the IAC, this was the first year that the winner of the the championship game is the IAC Champion. Georgetown Prep beat the favored Bears (7-6 OT) in front of a great crowd at Landon. Nice job Prep as the 2011 IAC Lacrosse Champions.

4OT Thriller in DC

Georgetown lost to Loyola in the fourth overtime Sunday afternoon in DC and this lost will cost the Hoya’s post-season play in the NCAA tournament again. Too bad that someone had to loose this game. This was a rescheduled game from a Saturday rain out and what a great day to shoot with the late afternoon sun and clear blue skys.

Spring Fling - #1 Good Counsel vs. # 8 St Stephans & St Agnes

This morning had a playoff feeling at SSSA with undefeated # 2 Good Counsel (MD) vs. #8 St. Stephens & St. Agnes (VA) at the 20th annual Spring Fling in Alexandria. I have never seen this many people at a girls lacrosse game, the field had fans almost all around the sidelines. This was the first time Good Counsel has beaten traditional DC lacrosse power SSSA (11-7). Check out more of my game photos here.

Instant Classic in DC

Prep vs. Gonzaga is one of the best high school rivals in the area, but in terms of lacrosse the Hoyas have had the best of the Eagles. Gonzaga was all over Prep with a 6-3 lead late in the fourth quarter and you could hear the nervous excitement from the Gonzaga bench, fans and family as this might be the year for a win over their cross-town Jesuit rivals. Then Prep turned it on and tied the game with 1:33 left forcing overtime and a 7-6 win. Gonzaga is a favorite of mine to shoot games with some great backgrounds and with 4:30 PM start some great afternoon light. The #8 UNC Tar Heels won at College Park for the first time since 2003 and improved to 7-2 with a nice come from behind win over the Terps at College Park. The vocal crowd of 3,176 fans and a national television audience on ESPN made for a big game feel for an early season game. The field at Byrd stadium is curved and makes for some careful planning on where you shoot. It really cuts the available filed with my 300mm lens to about a quarter of most fields. Must be because Byrd is a football first field.

Tried playing with a Canon 24 Tilt Shift lens over the weekend, I guess you can always get the same effect with some Photoshop editing, but it is always better to get the result straight out of the camera.

Just finished shooting the Inside Lacrosse Face-Off Classic at M and T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. This event is usually the start of the lacrosse season for me. I have shot this event for several years and this event is first class, IL, ESPN and the promoters do a great job of making this event a run great each year. Pride Captain wins first ever POTY award

I have been working with the Washington Pride hockey team for the past 3 years and it was good to see that the Pride Captain Haley Skarupa has been selected as the JWHL's Player of the Year. Great to see a Maryland player getting this award and recognition against the best players from across the US and Canada.

No. 7 Georgetown Women’s Lacrosse Season Opener vs. No. 2 Northwestern

Georgetown stayed closed to Northwestern for the first half and then the stronger NW team pulled ahead for a 24-15 win in front of a good crowd at the Georgetown University Multi-Purpose Field. Great weather and good light, just wish they would finish the construction at the end of the field, not a great background and it seems like they have been working on this for years.

This is my forth year shooting the JWHL Challenge Cup and it is the fourth year that the Little Caesars team has made the finals. Congratulations to Little Caesars on a great win and another championship. The Kettler Capital Iceplex is a photographers dream for shooting hockey; bright lights, photog box with no glass and the rink is actually not freezing.

This is my third year covering the Father George National Jesuit Christmas Classic. It was great to see all the returning Jesuit high schools from across the county and a few new schools this year. Have to give it to the home team Prep going down big in the first half of the championship game and fighting back to make the game competitive. Congratulations to Strake Jesuit from Houston on a great championship game. Lets hear it for New York, New York

For a little school in Indiana, Notre Dame was everywhere in New York when the Fighting Irish renewed its long-standing series with the USMA at Yankee Stadium. NYC was transformed into South Bend with ND band in Times Square to the standing room only crowd of more than 2,400 at the St. Patrick's mass, and the packed bars with all the subway alumni from the area. This weekend shows what makes Notre Dame a special place, even in NYC.

Still don't fully understand why they tossed Prep out of the IAC football conference. This game used to be one of the great DC high school games to circle on the calendar. Both schools still try to make this game what is used to be when this game decided the IAC conference championship. Good to see that this game is back on the back on the schedule.

I have been driving up and down Route 4 in Calvert County for years traveling to my parents house in Soloman's Island and always wanted to take some time to photograph these great aging landmarks. I was surprised by all the recent development and hope these classic barns find a way to survive all this growth in the DC area.

This was my third game this year with McNamara and I thought this was their game for their first win of the season. High School Football Weekend

Just finished a great weekend shooting high school football. Started Friday night with Damascus vs. Springbrook and I was very impressed with Damascus as they looked like State Champions to me. Saturday started with Bishop Ireton at Bullis and then quickly off to Bishop McNamara at Good Counsel. Loved shooting the late afternoon game with the warm sunset tone, which is a complete opposite of the Friday night game at Springbrook. The field lights were so bad I left at halftime.

DC Football Afternoon

90 degrees the last weekend in September and a great Saturday football afternoon in DC. WCAC conference foes St. John's College High School vs. Archbishop Carroll High School. Congratulations to the 4-0 Carroll team and a nice win over a good St. John's team. Way too many photogs on the sideline, this is still a high school game, but too many people with brand new DLSR’s.

Jesuit Gridiron Classic

The annual Jesuit Gridiron Classic always brings out the best in the Prep vs. Gonzaga rivalry. Great crowd and great weather, but the game was not as close as I would have thought (Gonzaga 41 – Prep 21). The Prep campus looked great with the new addition to the student center and it make a great entry for the players.

I-95 Kick-Off Classic - Baltimore vs DC

It was great to get back to the sidelines after some time off for the summer months, and it was good to get back to football with the start of the high school season. I spent Saturday shooting the I-95 Kick-Off Classic which showcases the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association from Baltimore and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference from Washington DC. The final game featured the Washington Post #1 ranked Good Counsel vs. the Baltimore Sun #1 ranked Gilman. Thanks to Tony Kennedy and his staff from Extra Point Productions for the help at the games as well as the opportunity to showcase my photography.

Are You Ready for Some Football

Summer is almost over and football season is around the corner. I am excited adn courious about my teams with Redskins and Fighting Irish with new coaches, new systems, and hopefully a new attitude; we will see how they work shortly, but at least some changes and hope for a rebuilding season. I just signed-up to cover the I-95 Kick-Off Classic which will feature the best high school teams from Washington DC and the WCAC conference vs. Baltimore and the MIAA conference. I have worked all-day tournaments before, but this will be a challenge with four football games in one day.

Spent the weekend shooting the MadLax Summer Tour Finale tournament at the Soccerplex this weekend. It was great to see all the family support for these kids with 100 degree record breaking heat. I think I can finally say this was the last lacrosse event of the year. 130 Degrees and a Great Day for Lacrosse

130o on the turf field and I am complaining about just sitting and shooting the adidas National Lacrosse Classic? I have no idea how they are playing their third game today, maybe being 17 has something to do with it?

The adidas National Lacrosse Classic features the Top 500 Underclassmen standouts in the country selected to play for their regional team.

The winner of the national finals (Maryland Prep) will qualify to play for the Brogden Cup against the best team in Canada later in the year.

Under Armour All America Lacrosse

I was fortunate to have the opportunity to shoot the Under Armour All America games again this year. This was my third year shooting the All America games and this weekend is the equivalent to the US Army All-American Bowl but with lacrosse. It was great see all the teams, players and families from around the country and this tight lacrosse community. Thanks to IL for the help with the credentials and media pass.

Patti and I just got back from a weekend of great food and wine at the Food and Wine Classic in Aspen. This was the first time I have been to the Colorado Rockies in the summer and it was great to see all the green in the valley and still a little snow at the top of the mountains. We stayed at the Regis Hotel which was great enough even before they offered the use of a brand new E Class Convertible for the afternoon. We took a ride in the mountains and some great photo opportunities. Thanks to our friend Peter and Isabella for the invitation and all the support your give Patti at work.

Tewaaraton Award Banquet

This was my third year covering the The Tewaaraton Awards for Inside Lacrosse and I enjoy learning more about the history of the game and its roots with American Indian heritage. The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award honoring the top female and male varsity collegiate lacrosse player in the United States (think Heisman Trophy, only for Lacrosse).

I guess this also ends the official lacrosse season for me. The sport is great with freezing early games to the 140 degree field last weekend at M&T Bank stadium for the NCAA finals.

4 Seconds and it is Over

Two different set of emotions in the final frames from the weekend. The looks on the Notre Dame players faces as they watch the reply of the overtime Duke says it all. Also, love the cameras in the frames trying to get the Duke celebration, I guess I am just taller than the rest to get the view of all the cameras. Scott Rodgers really shows his leadership after the game in telling his team mates to pick-up their heads and walk-off the field as winners. Go Irish!

Notre Dame was unseated entering the tournament and many thought they Notre Dame should not have been selected limping to a 7-6 finish that featured losses to Rutgers, Fairfield, Villanova and Georgetown.
